Personal Worship

Kevin O’Callaghan, an instructor at New York’s School of Visual Arts, not long ago came across an auction on eBay at 3 in the morning for church pews and interior elements from a church in Newark. Any interested party had exactly 24 hours to bid or the items would be destroyed. On a whim, O’Callaghan put in a bid for $500 for the entire church interior and, to his surprise, he won. Within 24 hours, with the help of his students, he drove away with 32 pews in a 24-foot truck and brought them to a workshop at the school.

Now what? The assignment that followed was for his students to redesign or illustrate a pew. They had to make a statement about something that they personally worship. The students had four weeks to deliver the goods. Some selected money, others hair and one even chose bacon. The pews will be on exhibit at the Art Directors Club in New York until April 8. Below are just a few of the end results:

  1. what a wonderful idea. I love the examples and hope I don’t have to travel to NY to see the rest of them! Thanks for posting!
